Why we lead with engineered, not solid
The region swings from humid summers to dry, heated winters. Solid boards expand and shrink with that cycle, which shows up as gaps in January and cupping in August. An engineered plank has a real hardwood wear layer over cross-laminated plies that resist that movement, so it can be installed over concrete slabs and radiant heat where solid wood cannot.
What to compare between collections
Wear layer thickness decides how many times the floor can be sanded and refinished. Adhesives and finish decide emissions: look for the TSCA Title VI (or CARB Phase 2) formaldehyde compliance label, which we confirm for every hardwood we quote. Width affects stability: wider planks look calmer but need a flatter subfloor.
Our hardwood lines
Anderson Tuftex engineered hardwood is made in South Carolina and is our main wide-plank white oak. You can also browse all USA-made flooring.
Finishing and refinishing
For site-finished or refinished floors we offer a plant-oil hardwax finish that can be spot repaired without sanding the whole room. See Osmo Polyx-Oil and our natural oil hardwood refinishing service, popular with owners of original oak floors in Takoma Park, Cleveland Park and Old Town Alexandria.

Common questions
Can engineered hardwood go in a basement?
Many engineered collections are approved for below-grade installation when glued or floated over a slab that passes moisture testing. Solid hardwood is not recommended below grade.
How many times can engineered hardwood be refinished?
It depends on the wear layer. A thin veneer may allow one light screen and recoat; thicker sawn-face layers can be fully sanded more than once. Each product page lists the construction.
