Three ways bamboo becomes a floor
Solid, flat or vertical grain. Strips of bamboo are laminated into a solid plank. Flat grain shows the bamboo's nodes; vertical grain turns the strips on edge for a finer, quieter look. Teragren PureForm is built this way, and Teragren reports it averages 40% harder than red oak.
Strand-woven. Bamboo fibers are shredded, compressed with a binder and cut into planks. The result is the hardest bamboo floor; Teragren reports its Xcora strand bamboo averages 160% harder than red oak.
Engineered. A bamboo wear layer is bonded to a core, which makes the plank more stable across seasons. CALI's engineered bamboo puts its Fossilized strand bamboo wear layer on a multi-ply core and can be floated, glued or nailed depending on the collection.
What to check besides "bamboo"
Bamboo floors are held together with adhesives, so the binder matters more than the plant. Look for formaldehyde compliance under TSCA Title VI (or CARB Phase 2) and an emissions certification such as FloorScore. CALI states its floors are FloorScore certified and CARB and TSCA compliant; Teragren states its flooring meets TSCA Title VI. We attach the current certificate to your quote. Bamboo in Mid-Atlantic humidity
Like wood, bamboo takes on and gives up moisture. The swing from humid DC summers to dry, heated winters moves solid bamboo more than engineered bamboo, so we favor engineered or strand-woven planks over concrete and in rooms with large windows. Bamboo or hardwood?

Common questions
Is bamboo flooring waterproof?
No. Bamboo is a plant fiber and can swell with standing water. Some collections are sold as water resistant, which means spills wiped up promptly will not harm the surface. For a full bath or laundry room, look at our waterproof options.
Can bamboo flooring be refinished?
Solid and strand-woven bamboo can usually be sanded and refinished. Engineered bamboo depends on the thickness of its bamboo wear layer; check the collection before planning to sand.
